.............................
With her spouse struggling with a man they had caught breaking into their car, a St. Louis, Missouri, woman ran back into her home, called 911 and got a.38-cal. handgun. Meanwhile, the burglar produced a box-cutter and proceeded to slash the husband several times before the woman returned and loosed a fatal shot at the attacker. (The PostDispatch, St. Louis, MO, 3/15/97)
...............................
An errant eight-point buck crashed through the window of a busy Brandon, Mississippi, clinic, scattering patients and staff. Panicked and confused, the whitetail trashed a couple of exam rooms and kicked a hole in a wall. When it became apparent there was no way to get the deer settled down, a doctor retrieved a gun from his car and put the animal down before anybody was hurt. (The
Clarion-Ledger,
Jackson, MS, 3/6/97)...............................
After hearing a late-night knock at the door of his Wichita, Kansas, home, Harvey Green went to investigate with his Smith & Wesson .357 revolver in hand. It was a good thing, too, as a pair of men asked to use the phone, then brandished a rifle and attempted to force their way inside after Green politely refused their request. "I fired one shot through the glass of the front door, and I hit one of them," Green said. The suspects fled and a wounded 18-year-old male was later admitted to an area hospital, where police apprehended him. Grien, a champion pistol shot with a house full of trophies to prove it, said, "I could have finished him pretty easily. I still had five rounds left. But he was running away.
Press, Newport News, VA 4/3/97)
Ruth Gray, 86, of Augusta, Georgia, came in from her backyard to find her home being ransacked. She crept to where she kept her .38 handgun and began looking for the intruder. "He thought he was going to get out the back door ... but I locked it." She shot the would-be burglar in the hand and he fled the home. He was apprehended a month later by police. At the- -crook's hearing, the judge said to the woman, "I hope when I'm 86 1 can shoot as well as you can." (The Chronicle, Augusta, GA 1 1/2/96)
Three masked men entered a Moulton, Alabama, home in an attempt to rob the family living there. After one of the intruders placed a pistol to the head of a man in the house, a female resident said she needed to go into a back room to Let her baby. Instead, she returned with a @istol and began fning at the intruders. TWO of the men fled, while the third was held for police. One suspect turned himself in. The third was still at large, but police knew his identity and an arrest was expected. All of the bandits had criminal histories, including one who was awaiting @ for rape at the time of the home invasion. (The Daily, Decatur, AL, 4/21/97)
After hearing his back door being kicked in, Michael Carter, of kansas City, Missouri, grabbed his gun. Confronted by an invader, he pleaded with the man to leave. Instead, the intruder charged,
forcing Carter to fatally shoot him. The break-in was the 2nd for Carter in less than a week. Poll the incident, "You have [here] example of the appropriate use of a firearm in the home." (The Star, Kansas City, MO, 4/10/97)
Herbert Reese, 65, of Montgomery, Alabama, knows the value of @aving'a' firearm for personal protection. He owns a convenience store that has been robbed six times since 1989. The last robbery proved fatal for the thug. After closing his shop, Reese, a concealed-carry permit holder, was approached by the young crook, who displayed a pistol and demanded his wallet. Reese complied, but then drew his.38 revolver and shotthe robher dead. In four of the previous incidents, a firearm had been used to prevent a robbery, and Reese has never been charged for defending himself "You would have thought people would know not to rob around here by now," he said. (The Advertiser, Montgomery, AL, 3/18/97)
Car thieves are rarely caught in the act, but that was not the case for an alleged thief who tried to take Jesse Ra@erez's car. Ramierez, of San Antonio, Texas, awoke to find his car being hot-wired early one morning. He grabbed his 9 mm Beretta pistol and dashed outside to pursue the fleeing suspect in another vehicle. After a brief chase, Ramierez apprehended the suspect and held him for police. Police said Ramierez will not be charged. (The Express News, San Antonio, TX, 4/10/97)
An alert postman in rural Reno County, Kansas, rounded up a posse of sorts after witnessing a suspicious vehicle cruising up the driveway of a home where he knew the owners were away. The postal worker and four armed, local residents returned to the home to find it being burglarized by two men. They ordered the pair to lie on the ground an alerted sheriff's deputies, who arrived on the scene. (The E Wichita, KS, I/l/97)

Its a fact that responsible gun ownership can:
reduce crime without a shot being fired.
Its a fact that concealed gun ownership does reduce crime.
Its a fact that the ant-gun people do distort the facts.
Consider the cop killer bullets. Not one of the bullets has ever been used on a policeman, in fact law enforcement beg NBC not to broadcast the the report. The report let people know the ammo was there-before it was virtually unknown.
It has never been used or offered for sale to the general public.....

ACTION: If one or both of your Senators voted for the
unconstitutional Incumbent Protection Bill, please forward
your
displeasure to them by phone, fax or email. (See below
for the list
of Senators voting for S. 27.) Be sure to thank your Senator
if he
voted right. Also, please communicate with President George
Bush
and let him know that S. 27 deserves a veto if it ever
gets to his
desk.
(Tuesday, April 3, 2001) -- Americans should be hopping
mad.
Senators yesterday voted for a bill that was nothing other
than an
Incumbent Protection Plan, pure and simple.
The anti-gun bill, S. 27, works to silence the voice of
outside
groups, like GOA, that help educate voters before an election.
At
the same time, the bill enhances the ability of the politicians
in
the Republican and Democrat parties to raise and spend
money to get
their candidates elected.
The bill, sponsored by Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and
Russ
Feingold (D-WI), passed the Senate by a 59-41 vote. Eleven
Republicans, other than McCain, broke ranks with their
leadership.
The anti-gun McCain bill would prohibit groups like GOA
from running
TV or radio ads that mention a candidate's name in the
60 days prior
to an election. [This restriction entered the bill through
the
Wellstone amendment -- the contents of which GOA reported
last
week.] In other words, S. 27 prohibits many kinds of free
speech
two months before an election for everyone but the media,
the
parties and federal candidates.
Moreover, the Senate Incumbent Protection Bill increases
the amount
of money that the parties can receive during an election
cycle,
while freezing the dollar amounts given to political action
committees (PACs) operated by groups like GOA.
For example, contribution limits to state and local party
committees
will be doubled, and dollar limits to the national party
committees
will be increased by 25%. But the amount of money which
individuals
can give to grassroots PACs, such as the one run by Gun
Owners of
America, will NOT be increased at all under the provisions
of S. 27.
Get the picture? More money and more freedom for federal
candidates
and the parties that represent them. But more restrictions
for the
people who wish to complain about their behavior in office.
In a strongly worded letter to Senators, GOA explained
that support
for this bill would be regarded as nothing other than an
effort to
restrict the First Amendment to cover their own moral inadequacies.
In a letter dated March 29, 2001, GOA Executive Director
stated that
it is no surprise that:
Senator [McCain] who shamed the nation with his membership
in the
Keating 5 [has led] the effort to silence outside criticism
of
incumbents.... The problem with the American political
system is
NOT that too much free speech has educated the American
people too
thoroughly on dangerous legislation which would impact
them.
Rather, the problem with the American political system
is that
politicians who enter $8 million book deals, steal furniture
from
the government, lie under oath, sell presidential pardons,
and
date rape federal employees on government property believe
they
can cover their own indiscretions by taking away the First
Amendment rights of others.
The Senate bill is an abomination. It now moves to the
House, where
Republican leaders such as Minority Whip Tom DeLay (R-TX)
have
committed to do everything in their power to torpedo the
legislation. GOA is working with House leaders to devise
strategies
to kill the bill as well.
One big question mark, however, remains regarding President
George
Bush. It is unclear how he would act if the Senate bill
were sent
to him. Bush opposes some of the aspects in S. 27, but
he has said
he will sign a bill that "improves the system."

TO SENATORS WHO VOTED IN FAVOR OF THE INCUMBENT PROTECTION
BILL:
Dear Senator:
I was disappointed to see that you voted in favor of such
an
unconstitutional measure as the McCain-Feingold bill. S.
27 is
nothing more than an Incumbent Protection Bill which will
increase
the money (and power) that federal politicians can wield
to get
themselves elected. At the same time, the Wellstone amendment
in
the bill works to silence watchdog groups that I depend
upon to let
me know how my elected officials are behaving. Shame!
TO THE PRESIDENT:
Dear President Bush:
I was disappointed to see that the Senate voted for such
an
unconstitutional measure as the McCain-Feingold bill. S.

ever gets
to your desk, I hope you will not hesitate to veto it,
as it
squelches the First Amendment rights of all Americans.
Thank you.

THIS IS AN OLD ALERT BUT IT TELLS YOU WHAT IS HAPPENING BEHIND OUR BACKS, STAY INFORMED,GET INVOLVED.
Rep. Ron Paul Moving to Eliminate Gun Control Bureaucracy
-- Amendment would remove U.S. from U.N. jurisdiction
by Gun Owners of America
8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151
(703)321-8585, fax: 321-8408, http://www.gunowners.org
(Wednesday, June 4, 1997) -- Pro-gun Representative Ron Paul
(R-TX) is working to remove a tourniquet that is slowly being
drawn around gun owners' necks. GOA has learned from his office
that Rep. Paul plans to introduce -- either today or tomorrow --
an amendment that will pull the U.S. out of the U.N. His office
has asked GOA and its supporters to generate support for passing
this amendment.
Among the many benefits of withdrawing from the world
government would be that the U.N. would no longer have any
authority to enforce its gun control agenda -- an agenda which
has been quietly gathering momentum in the past couple of years.
Here is a brief synopsis of the problem and what Rep. Paul is
planning to do:WHILE I THINK THE UN DOES A LOT OF GOOD-I DO NOT THINK THEY NEED TO
BE INVOLVED IN OUR SOVEREIGNTY-AND OUR GOV. ALLOWING THIS IS WRONG. WE DO NOT NEED TO BE INVOLVED IN THIS PARTICULAR PROGRAM.
From the Horse's Mouth -- U.N. openly looking to register
private firearms globally
* The documents from the U.N.'s own webpage --
http://www.un.org -- make it clear that they are very serious
about disarming American civilians. For example, on December
22, 1995, the UN announced the launch of a study of small
arms. Among the countries involved in this study are the
Japanese, Canadian and Russian governments. (Also
participating was Stewart Allen, Chief of the Intelligence
Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.)
*** A few months later, the U.N. Commission on Crime Prevention
and Criminal Justice met in Vienna (May, 1996) to discuss
strategies for civilian disarmament among the member states.
In announcing this summit, U.N. bureaucrats set forth what
they perceived to be a major problem -- namely, that "small
arms are spreading throughout society with little
documentation, since they are frequently bought from private
individuals." Thus, one of the commission's objectives was to
study gun control laws around the world for "the development
of related strategies" among the member countries (like the
U.S.).
* Since most countries register gun owners, one would
undoubtedly expect that the "related strategies" would include
registering all guns so that the U.N. and the subordinate
governments (including the U.S.) will know where the guns are.
No more anonymous gun sales with "little documentation." No
more passing a gun down from father to son. No more selling a
gun to a friend at the office. Big Brother will track
everything pertaining to guns.
* Gun control illustrates one of the dangers of the U.S.
membership in the U.N. In May of 1994, the Clinton
administration agreed to participate in a discussion of ways
for the United Nations to control the manufacture of guns and
their sales to civilians. This was over a year before all of
the activities of the U.N. Commission on Crime Prevention and
Criminal Justice swung into motion with financial support from
Japan and bureaucrats on loan from our neighbor, Canada.
These other countries were not sneaking in the back door of
U.S. sovereignty -- our own government was hiding behind the
U.N. to carry out the civilian disarmament they did not think
they could get away with by themselves.
ACTION: Support Rep. Paul and the "American Sovereignty
Restoration Amendment"!
* Call or fax your Representative and ask them to support what
is known as either the "Paul Amendment" or the "American
Sovereignty Restoration Amendment." He plans to offer this
amendment to H.R. 1757, the Foreign Relations Authorization
Act. In brief, Rep. Paul's amendment would get the U.S. out of
the U.N. and the U.N. out of the U.S.
* Phone numbers for Reps: 1-800-962-3524, 1-800-972-3524 and

rep. Paul Introduces Semi-Auto Ban Repeal!
by Gun Owners of America
8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102
Springfield, VA 22151, (703)321-8585, fax: 321-8408
(Friday, March 21, 1997) -- Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) has introduced a bill to repeal the Clinton ban on certain semi-automatic firearms. Rep. Paul introduced H.R. 1147 yesterday, and his office has asked GOA members and activists for their help in getting cosponsors to the bill.
Heres what the bill would do:
ACTION ITEM: Urge your Representative to cosponsor H.R. 1147, the "Second Amendment Restoration Act of 1997." Call your Representative at 202-225-3121. Or you can also reach them at 1-800-962-3524 or 1-800-972-3524, but be prepared to let the phone ring a few times. The GOA website contains mailto: links for those Representatives who have e-mail. Always include your postal address when sending e-mail to your member of Congress.
UPDATE on Chenoweth bill (H.R. 1009): You will remember that Rep. Helen Chenoweth (R-ID) has introduced a bill to fully repeal the Lautenberg gun ban which disarms millions of Americans for very slight misdemeanors, even those committed as long as 20 years ago. Her bill has 11 cosponsorsthe same 11 that cosigned the bill upon introduction.
Many of you have reported that your Representative claims to be a cosponsor, even though we didnt list him in our March 12 alert. Be forewarned: your Rep. could be just feeding you a line. (Or, it could just mean that he wants to cosponsor the bill, but just hasnt gotten around to it. If so, then press him to do it right away.) The list we have given you is from LegiSlate, one of the premier Congressional tracking services. If your Rep. is not listed below, then he is NOT on the bill.
Here are the Reps. who have cosponsored the bill as of 12:00 P.M. on Friday: Tom Coburn (R-OK), Barbara Cubin (R-WY), John Doolittle (R-CA), Jim Gibbons (R-NV), Virgil Goode (D-VA), Wally Herger (R-CA), John Hostettler (R-IN), Ron Lewis (R-KY), Ron Paul (R-TX), Joe Skeen (R-NM), and Don Young (R-AK).
Correction: Our March 12 e-mail alert stated that H.R. 1009 "lays out 17 findings that help advance the pro-gun cause." In fact, two findings were merged together right before introduction, and thus, the bill officially contains only 16 findings.
1 The 1994 crime bill states that gun dealers can not operate
a business unless "the requirements of State and local law
applicable to the business have been met." This means the BATF
now has arbitrary authority to use zoning laws to shut down gun
dealers. And in fact, this has greatly contributed to the
massive drop in federally licensed firearms (FFL) dealers. FFLs
have now plummeted nearly 57 percent to the lowest level in 22
yearsfor a total of more than 150,000 dealers who have lost
their licenses.
chenoweth Introduces Full Lautenberg Repeal
Your work helps deliver 11 Cosponsors!
by Gun Owners of America
8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102
Springfield, VA 22151
(Wednesday, March 12) -- Rep. Helen Chenoweth (R-ID) yesterday introduced a full repeal of the Lautenberg gun ban. Thanks to your help, phones have been ringing off the hook on Capitol Hill, and 11 Representatives have signed on to her bill as original cosponsors.
[By contrast, the other leading bill to repeal the Lautenberg gun ban only had one original cosponsor when it was introduced earlier this year. That bill, introduced by Rep. Bob Barr (R-GA), would only repeal the retroactive part of the gun ban, leaving the ban in place for the future. While opposing the retroactive part of the ban, Rep. Barr endorsed the underlying principle behind the Lautenberg gun ban last Thursday (3/6/97) in USA Today, calling it "important and worthwhile legislation."]
Rep. Chenoweths bill (H.R. 1009) repeals the ENTIRE
Lautenberg ban. Entitled the "States Rights and Second and
Tenth Amendment Restoration Act of 1997," the bill lays out 17
findings that help advance the pro-gun cause. For instance,
the bill states that,
HERES WHAT TO DO:
If youre Representative is not listed below, keep on him. Get your friends, neighbors, family, gun clubs, etc. to support the Chenoweth repeal bill. And remember to emphasize that the Chenoweth bill (H.R. 1009) is the only bill to completely repeal the Lautenberg gun ban from the federal code. All the other half-baked repeals would still leave the ban in the federal code for the future.
WHO HAS COSPONSORED THE CHENOWETH BILL ALREADY?
1. Rep. Tom Coburn (R-OK)
2. Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-WY)
3. Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA)
4. Rep. Jim Gibbons (R-NV)
5. Rep. Virgil Goode (D-VA)
6. Rep. Wally Herger (R-CA)
7. Rep. John Hostettler (R-IN)
8. Rep. Ron Lewis (R-KY)
9. Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

Another Assault on the Bill of Rights
-- CWC Treaty violates protections that gun owners enjoy
by Gun Owners of America, fax: 703-321-8408
http://www.gunowners.org
(April 16, 1997) -- Last week, Gun Owners of America
represented the nation's gun owners when it took the stage with
Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) and almost 40 other conservative groups
and talk show hosts to oppose the Chemical Weapons Convention
(CWC) -- a treaty aimed at banning certain types of weapons.
While there are certainly many reasons for opposing the treaty,
at stake from a gun owner's perspective is the assault on the
American Bill of Rights.
As stated by Sen. Inhofe on the Senate floor last week, "I
think we should also look at the constitutionality of this
[treaty]. I know a lot of times things are passed around here
over the fact that it is a violation of the Constitution. . . .
But in this case, it would permit searches and seizures without
warrants or probable cause. I think this is a very serious
thing."
Judge Robert H. Bork also has commented on the Fourth and
Fifth Amendment violations in the treaty, noting that: "The U.S.
is required by the CWC to enforce inspection by an international
team, even over opposition from the owner. On-site personnel can
be compelled to answer questions, provide data, and permit
searches of anything within the premises -- including records,
files, papers, processes, controls, structures and vehicles."
According to Bork, international 'observers' would be
allowed to inspect U.S. property without a warrant, and even
seize American goods without probable cause. For now, the treaty
would only 'authorize' infringements upon those who own chemical
companies. But allowing foreign agents to violate the most basic
freedoms of any American is a horrible precedent that should make
every gun owner shudder. The Bill of Rights either protects
every American, or it protects none at all. If we allow our
government officials to start carving out exceptions -- groups of
people to whom the Bill of Rights does not apply -- then it will
be only a matter of time before the enumerated rights become
meaningless . . . before these rights no longer apply to anyone.
Gun Owners of America joined Senator Inhofe and the near 40
organizations in denouncing the Constitutional violations in
this treaty at a press conference last Thursday. "The Fourth and
Fifth Amendments protect gun owners," said GOA Director of
Government Affairs Erich Pratt. "But this treaty will eventually
endanger everyone's rights if it is approved by the Senate.
"Two hundred years ago, King George tried to use general
warrants to search for and seize American's property. We fought
a war over it. Now, we're using a treaty to give foreign King
Georges who are unaccountable to the American people the same
power to run around the protections in the Bill of Rights. This
is insane," Pratt said.
ACTION: Senators are claiming that they have not heard any
opposition to this treaty. Well, let your senator know that you
do not approve of any violations of the Bill of Rights, and if
that means voting down this treaty, so be it. Put your
opposition in writing by faxing or mailing them a note.
Also, let Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) know that you
want him to lobby fellow Republicans against the treaty. There's
concern that Lott is not doing enough behind the scenes to kill the
treaty. As one member of the coalition noted, Lott "may 'do a
Bob Dole.' Greasing the skids for it and then voting against it
in order to satifsy constituents." According to The Washington
Post, Sen. Lott is scheduling a vote to occur sometime around
April 24. As Majority Leader, Lott could simply refuse to bring
up the Clinton-backed treaty for a vote. Senate:1-800-962-3524;
Lott's ph: 202-224-6253; fax: 224-2262.
Final note: This alert has only attempted to give the
Constitutional objections to the CWC. If you want more talking
points regarding this treaty, please call the Center for Security
Policy at 202-466-0515. On the Internet, you can find the treaty
at the Web site of the U.S. Arms Control & Disarmament Agency.

Good work on pushing the Citizen's Self-Defense Act. Dozens
of you sent Western Union mailgrams to your Representatives
asking them to cosponsor HR 27, the Citizen's Self Defense Act.
Eleven new cosponsors have now jumped on board, bringing the
total to 52. This bill has more cosponsors than any other
pro-gun bill in the Congress. The bill is important as it would
protect anyone who uses a gun in self-defense, even if the gun
used was carried without a permit or possessed without a license.
(Certainly, Bernie Goetz could have benefited from this bill
becoming law.)
Thanks to your help, Chenoweth's bill becomes the leading
repeal bill. Since our last alert, six more cosponsors have
signed onto Rep. Helen Chenoweth's bill to repeal the Lautenberg
gun ban. Her bill (HR 1009) now has 21 cosponsors, which is four
more than the compromise bill introduced by Rep. Bob Barr (R-GA).
Rep. Chenoweth's office has informed GOA that the six new
cosponsors are Reps. Jim Bunning (R-KY), John Cooksey (R-LA),
Michael Crapo (R-ID), David McIntosh (R-IN), Floyd Spence (R-SC)
and J.C. Watts (R-OK).
ACTION ITEMS:
1. GOA has updated the Western Union Hotline
(1-800-651-1486) to now send messages in support of repealing the
Lautenberg gun ban. These mailgrams will push support for H.R.
1009, as well as answer the typical reasons that Congressmen give
for keeping the gun ban in place. Many of these guys are on the
fence, and we just need to give them a forceful push to get them
as cosponsors. So let's swamp them in Western Union mailgrams!
The Hotline is also set up to send Thank You letters to all the
Representatives that have cosponsored H.R. 1009. A fee of $6.95
will be charged to your phone bill.
2. To really put the heat on, get GOA's five sample "Letters
to the Editor" and get them placed in your local papers. Each of
these letters will challenge your Representative to cosponsor
H.R. 1009. Each letter will identify him by name as being one of
the Congressmen who still have yet to support the full repeal of
the Lautenberg gun ban. Moreover, each letter will give powerful
arguments for the repeal of Lautenberg. Placing these letters in
the newspapers in your Congressman's district will force him to
either get on the bill or to continue "putting out brushfires."
There are five letters in all, so you can send one and get your
family and friends to send the others.
You can get these "Letters to the Editor" by faxing GOA a
request for them at 703-321-8408. Or, you can visit the GOA
website at http://www.gunowners.org/coslettb.htm to get copies of
the letters.
